GST Cut Drives New-Car Boom, But Puts Pressure on Pre-Owned Car Demand

The recent reduction in GST for new cars has triggered a sharp rise in India’s auto sales, yet it has had the opposite effect on the pre-owned car market. According to a report published on Nov. 26, 2025, by ETAuto, retail sales of new cars surged by 40.5 per cent year-on-year, reaching 40,23,923 units.

But that growth hasn’t translated into gains for used-car dealers. In fact, demand for younger used cars has fallen sharply in the short term.

Used-car demand drops; dealers recalibrate pricing
As new-car prices fall post-GST, pre-owned car dealers are under pressure to adjust their pricing. “There has been a 10 to 15 per cent drop in demand for used cars and about a 5 to 7 per cent correction in prices due to the GST impact,” said Abhishek Patodia, President – Used Cars at CarTrade.

Because dealers paid pre-GST prices for inventory, many now face margin compression. The GST on used cars only applies to dealer profits — not the entire vehicle price — limiting the overall tax burden.

Long-term outlook remains optimistic despite short-term slump
Industry analysts believe this slump may be temporary. According to Puneet Gupta, Director at S&P Global Mobility, “Used cars will be used as an important tool for OEMs to push new car sales through loyalty bonuses or by treating the old car as an attractive down-payment option.”

Patodia noted dealers expect demand to recover as procurement shifts to post-GST pricing, likely stabilizing the market by early next year. Meanwhile, long-term fundamentals remain strong. The pre-owned car market is still projected to grow at a 10 per cent CAGR, reaching 9.5 million units by 2030, up from 5.9 million in FY25.

Although used car sales may lag temporarily, the sheer size and growth potential of the market suggest a rebound remains likely over the medium to long term.
